My bedroom is in my basement, and while friends and family have been telling me they're struggling to sleep because their bedrooms have become unbearably hot, it's been a completely different experience for me. Down here, the temperature stays naturally cool and comfortable, so even on some of the hottest nights we've had, I've been sleeping really well.

It's not just at night, either. Throughout the day, I've found myself naturally gravitating downstairs whenever I want to escape the heat. Whether I'm catching up on work, relaxing with a coffee or simply taking a break from the high temperatures outside, my basement has become the coolest and most comfortable place in the house.

Having spent over 30 years building specialist basements, I'm often asked about the benefits of adding one to a property. Most people immediately think about the extra living space – whether that's an additional bedroom, home office, cinema room, gym or family room – and they're absolutely right. Creating valuable space beneath your home is one of the biggest advantages.

But during weather like this, another benefit becomes incredibly clear.

Because basements are surrounded by the ground, they naturally maintain a much more stable temperature throughout the year. They stay cooler during the summer months and warmer during the winter, creating a comfortable environment without relying heavily on additional heating or cooling.

With more homeowners now considering air conditioning as temperatures continue to rise, it's worth thinking about the wider picture. A basement doesn't just help you stay comfortable during a heatwave – it creates an entirely new level of living space that can be enjoyed all year round, while also adding long-term value to your home.

For me, this recent spell of hot weather has been a great reminder that some of the biggest advantages of a basement aren't always the most obvious. While many people have been searching for the coolest room in the house, I've been lucky enough to have one built into mine all along.

Sometimes, the best features of a home are the ones you only truly appreciate when you need them most.
